Beat Summer's Heat

August is a hot month in Honolulu, and we know Makana subscribers everywhere are finding ways to survive summer temperatures. This month's Makana includes some of the coolest Hawaii stuff we could find.

If you can't get a pineapple fresh from the fields, a good alternative is the sweet dried fruit from our friends at Kahala Fresh. If you've tried the apple bananas, this is a similar nothing-but-fruit treat. We ventured to the temperate slopes of Maui's Haleakala to find Upcountry Jams and Jeliles and their famous Maui Onion & Garlic Mustard. Perfect complement to your summer evening barbecues. And finally, nothing says Hawaii summer like the li hing flavor. if you've been lucky enough to try a real Ono Pops frozen treat or have a little li hing on your shave ice, you know there's not much more refreshing than the combination of sweet and sour plus icy and cold. Mix with your lemonade, shake in your margarita, or simply sprinkle on chilled, fresh apples and other fruits.
